What Is IPL?

Jul 5, 2018

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Though this sounds like something you might find at a rave party, IPL is a great tool for cosmetic dermatologists. The light in IPL consists of multiple wavelengths, unlike a laser that may have a single wavelength. The IPL devices found in physician offices are equipped with technology that produces high energy, high intensity, broad spectrum light for very short periods of time. Dermatologists use IPL for removal of unwanted hair and for photorejuvenation of the skin. After a course of treatments, IPL typically destroys the hair follicles in targeted areas, which then results in hair removal. IPL can also be used to treat acne, broken capillaries, melasma, and sun damage. The energy released through IPL treatments causes cells to die and rejuvenate, bringing forth more youthful skin.
