Skin Health & Dietary Supplements

Jun 25, 2018

Dietary supplements containing antioxidants often hype how they can make one’s skin look younger or improve one’s complexion. However, the American Academy of Dermatology urges consumers to be skeptical of companies that promise that potions and lotions can turn back the clock on aging caused by free radicals. Though a healthy diet, good skin care, avoiding the sun and having a balanced diet of vitamins and minerals help with overall health, dermatologists remind consumers that healthy skin is an indicator of a healthy body. The American Academy of Dermatology, as any American Medical Association related organization, puts stock in results from double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. This does not mean that patients should not take dietary supplements containing antioxidants like Vitamins A, C & E, but that they should be aware that empirical scientific evidence proving proof of such results may not exist.
