Skin Cancer Screening and Cosmetic Dermatology

Jun 25, 2018

According to a recently published article in the Wall Street Journal, more and more dermatologists are discovering skin cancers on their patients when they come in for cosmetic procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers, or other skin rejuvenation services. Patients in their 50’s and 60’s are seeking non-surgical methods to look younger – especially if they are former sun worshipers. One patient came in for Botox injections when her dermatologist noticed a bump in her eyebrow area. Upon further examination and biopsy, it was discovered that this patient had basal cell carcinoma. Unfortunately, most health insurance plans do not cover preventive skin cancer screenings despite the fact that 1:5 Americans will develop one form of skin cancer sometime in their lives.
