Folliculitis is a skin condition that occurs when the hair follicle becomes inflamed, resulting in a rash-like outbreak, eventual sores, and potential scarring. The most common reason for the inflammation can be attributed to infection, but there could be a number of reasons one suffers from the condition. If the condition goes untreated or is reoccurring, it can cause serious and permanent damage to the hair follicle, depending on if the inflammation is superficial or deep. If the follicle is deeply effected and scarring occurs, then hair loss and the inability for hair to regrow results. There are different, effective options that Cosmetic Surgeon and board-certified Dermatologist Dr. Anthony Nikko uses to address this condition. At The Nikko Cosmetic Surgery Center in Houston, TX, patients can be examined and treated for hair disorders like folliculitis.

Causes of Folliculitis
Viruses or Bacteria
The most common cause of folliculitis is an outside infection due to bacteria, such as staphylococcus aureus, viruses, or fungi that invade the hair follicles and create an outbreak.
Inflammation can occur from ingrown hairs, causing an infection to set in and folliculitis to take over the hair follicles.
Damaged hair follicles are highly susceptible to infection. Damage can be caused by friction from a razor blade or tight clothing, as well as trapped sweat, and scrapes or wounds from surgery or injury.
Depending on the severity of the folliculitis, different treatment options will be recommended to remedy the situation. If the case is less severe, then medications, such as topical creams or shampoos can be applied to clear up the inflammation, or antibiotics may be an appropriate method as well. On the other hand, if the infection is not superficial, minor procedures can be performed to combat the infection. If the folliculitis has caused hair loss, then Dr. Nikko offers advanced FUE treatments to restore the hair pattern.
